AutoNews- Former England boss Steve McClaren has joined Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv as a coaching consultant.The 56-year-old has been out of football since he was sacked by Derby for the second time in March, but it was initially thought he would turn down a move to Israel due to personal reasons.He will work under Maccabi manager Jordi Cruyff, who was a player at Manchester United when McClaren was assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson.'I have known (Cruyff) since the time we spent together at Manchester United and we have been in touch over the past couple of years,' McClaren told the club website.'I have huge respect for such a well known club both in Israel and in Europe and I intend to help Jordi and the players achieve success for the fans this season.'McClaren had been in the running for the vacant position as Hearts manager, throwing his hat into the ring to replace the sacked Ian Cathro at Tynecastle, but he dropped his interest last week.The former Newcastle United, Derby County and Nottingham Forest manager led Middlesbrough to the UEFA Cup Final in 2006 before a disastrous one-year spell in charge of England during which they failed to qualify for Euro 2008.But he then steered FC Twente to their maiden Dutch title in 2009-10 prior to an ill-fated period at the helm of German side Wolfsburg.McClaren's decision to head for Israel to work with Cruyff, who he coached at Manchester United during the late 1990s, leaves former Hearts players Steven Pressley and Paul Hartley and ex-Nottingham Forest boss Dougie Freedman in the running for the post.
