Why am I seeing a family consultant? 9-12 years

A Family Consultant is a person who works at the Court and helps families who don’t live together anymore.

They talk to parents and kids.

The Family Consultant helps the judge understand about you and your family.

Parents separating can be very hard for kids. The judge needs to know how you feel about what has happened in your family. The Family Consultant tells the judge these things when he or she goes to court, or in a report called a ‘Family Report’.

The Family Consultant will spend some time with you alone and then together with other members of your family. You do not have to say anything you don’t want to. You will not be asked to choose between your parents.

It is good to let the Family Consultant know what you think and feel about your family and what arrangements you think might work for you. Tell the Family Consultant if you are frightened, or if you are worried that what you want to say will upset your parents.

Some kids don’t want to tell the Family Consultant things that might upset their parents. Other kids want to tell the Family Consultant about what they think.

It is up to you to decide how much – or how little – you say. If you do discuss things with the Family Consultant, he or she will write a Family Report about the things that you and your family talk about. The judge, your parents and their solicitors will read the report.

You can ask the Family Consultant to tell you what it going to be in the report before other people read it.

Judges know a lot about families like yours where parents don’t live together anymore. It is their job to make a decision when parents can’t agree about important family things. They do this by finding out what you and your parents want and then try to make the best decision for everyone.

You do not meet the judge or go into the courtroom, but you do have a chance to let the judge know your thoughts and feelings by talking to the Family Consultant.
